FAQ

Additional Information On Salem, VA Tap Water

Is Salem tap water safe to drink?

Yes. Salem’s drinking water meets all federal and state drinking water standards. The City of Salem Water Department routinely monitors and tests water to ensure compliance with regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Health.

Is Salem tap water hard?

Salem’s water is generally considered moderately hard. The water comes primarily from the Roanoke River and groundwater wells, and hardness levels can vary slightly depending on the source and seasonal conditions. Hardness is caused by naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium. While it does not pose a health risk, harder water may contribute to scale buildup on plumbing fixtures and appliances over time.

Is there PFAS in Salem tap water?

Salem participated in the EPA’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) program, which tested for multiple PFAS compounds between 2023 and 2024. According to the report, 29 PFAS compounds were tested in the City of Salem’s finished drinking water and none were detected. These results indicate that PFAS were not found in Salem’s drinking water during the most recent monitoring cycle.

Does Salem tap water have fluoride?

Yes. Fluoride is added during treatment to help promote strong teeth and reduce cavities. In 2024, fluoride levels were detected at approximately 0.58 ppm, which is well below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 4.0 ppm and within the recommended range for dental health.

Does Salem tap water contain chlorine?

Yes. Chlorine is used as a disinfectant to control bacteria and other microorganisms during water treatment and distribution. In 2024, chlorine levels were measured at approximately 0.28 ppm, which is well below the EPA Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) of 4 ppm.

Where does Salem get its tap water?

Salem’s drinking water comes primarily from the Roanoke River, a surface water source. The city also supplements supply with groundwater from wells. These sources are managed by the City of Salem Water Department and treated to meet federal and state drinking water standards before being distributed to residents.

How is Salem water treated?

Water treatment in Salem includes several steps designed to remove contaminants and ensure safe drinking water. Raw water from the Roanoke River first passes through screening and clarification processes to remove sediment and debris. The water then undergoes filtration, followed by disinfection using chlorine to eliminate harmful microorganisms. Fluoride is added for dental health, and corrosion control measures are used to help protect plumbing systems and reduce the potential for lead or copper leaching.

Do I need a water softener or filter in Salem?

Salem’s drinking water meets all federal safety standards, so additional treatment is not required for safety. However, because the water can be moderately hard and contains chlorine for disinfection, some homeowners choose to install water softeners to reduce mineral buildup or filtration systems to improve taste and odor. These systems are typically installed for convenience or preference rather than regulatory necessity.

How does Salem monitor water quality?

The City of Salem Water Department conducts regular testing throughout the year to ensure water quality remains within regulatory standards. Samples are collected and analyzed for microbial contaminants, disinfectants, inorganic compounds, and other regulated substances. The city also participates in federal monitoring programs such as the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR), which includes testing for emerging contaminants like PFAS. Results are compiled annually and published in the city’s Consumer Confidence Report.
