FAQ
Additional Information On Roanoke, VA Tap Water
Is Roanoke tap water safe to drink?
Yes. Roanoke’s drinking water meets federal and state drinking water standards. The city completes required testing for regulated contaminants, and results are reviewed to confirm compliance with requirements.
Is Roanoke tap water hard?
Roanoke’s hardness level depends on the source:
- Carvins Cove (surface water): ~53 ppm (moderately hard)
- Crystal Spring: ~146 ppm (hard)
- Spring Hollow: ~151 ppm (hard)
Using EPA hardness categories shown in the report:
- 76–150 ppm = Moderately Hard
- 151–300 ppm = Hard
Many areas of Roanoke fall into the moderately hard to hard range.
Is there PFAS in Roanoke tap water?
Yes, PFAS were detected during monitoring at the Spring Hollow Reservoir source.
- HFPO-DA (GenX): 2024 average = 0.615 ppt (range ND–3.8 ppt). Federal MCL = 10 ppt 2025 CCR
- PFOA: Detected once at 8.9 ppt in 2023; weekly 2024 finished-water testing = non-detect 2025 CCR
Granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment was added to reduce PFAS levels, and current treated water is below federal standard.
Does Roanoke tap water have fluoride?
Yes. Fluoride was detected at 0.7 ppm in 2024. This level is well below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 4.0 ppm and aligns with recommended levels for dental health.
Does Roanoke tap water contain chlorine?
Yes. Fluoride is added to promote dental health.
- Carvins Cove: 0.62 ppm 2025 CCR
- Crystal Spring: 0.56 ppm 2025 CCR
- Spring Hollow: 0.68 ppm 2025 CCR
All levels are below the EPA MCL of 4.0 ppm.
Where does Roanoke get its tap water?
Roanoke’s water comes from a combination of surface water and groundwater sources. Major sources include Carvins Cove Reservoir, Spring Hollow Reservoir, Roanoke River, and Crystal Spring, along with additional springs and wells throughout the service area. The system serves the City of Roanoke as well as surrounding counties and towns.
How is Roanoke water treated?
Treatment varies slightly by source but generally includes oxygenation or aeration, coagulation and clarification, filtration, chlorine disinfection, fluoridation, and corrosion control through pH adjustment and orthophosphate addition. At Spring Hollow, granular activated carbon has been added specifically to reduce PFAS levels. These processes are designed to remove contaminants and maintain compliance with federal drinking water standards.
Do I need a water softener or filter in Roanoke?
Roanoke’s tap water meets all federal safety standards, so a filter or softener is not required for safety. However, because parts of the system fall into the hard water range, some homeowners choose to install a water softener to reduce scale buildup and improve soap performance. Others may use activated carbon or reverse osmosis filters to reduce chlorine taste or for additional PFAS reduction. These decisions are based on personal preference rather than regulatory necessity.
How does Roanoke monitor water quality?
The Western Virginia Water Authority performs continuous monitoring and routine testing in accordance with EPA and Virginia Department of Health requirements. Testing schedules vary by contaminant, with some tested annually, some quarterly, and others on multi-year cycles. The Authority also participates in the EPA’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR5) program, conducts weekly PFAS testing at Spring Hollow, maintains a Lead Service Line Inventory, and publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report to keep residents informed.
