Is Roanoke tap water safe to drink?
Yes. Roanoke’s drinking water, supplied by the Western Virginia Water Authority, meets federal (EPA) and Virginia Department of Health drinking water standards. The Water Authority serves the City of Roanoke along with Roanoke, Franklin, and Botetourt counties and the towns of Vinton and Boones Mill.
Is Roanoke tap water hard?
It depends on your source. In the most recent report, Carvins Cove reservoir water was moderately hard at about 53 ppm, while Crystal Spring (about 146 ppm) and Spring Hollow (about 151 ppm) were hard. Homes on the harder sources often see scale on fixtures, spots on dishes, and buildup inside water heaters and dishwashers.
Is there PFAS in Roanoke tap water?
Yes, at low levels from one source. The Water Authority monitors Spring Hollow Reservoir weekly for PFAS. In the most recent report, HFPO-DA (GenX) averaged 0.615 parts per trillion (range non-detect to 3.8 ppt) in treated water, well below the 10 ppt federal limit listed in the report. After an earlier PFOA detection, the Authority added granular activated carbon treatment at Spring Hollow, and finished-water PFOA results have since been non-detect.
Does Roanoke tap water have fluoride?
Yes. The Water Authority adds fluoride to promote dental health. The most recent report shows fluoride at 0.62 ppm from Carvins Cove, 0.56 ppm from Crystal Spring, and 0.68 ppm from Spring Hollow, all well below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 4.0 ppm.
Does Roanoke tap water contain chlorine?
Yes. Roanoke’s water is disinfected with chlorine, measured at about 1.0 ppm in the most recent report, below the EPA maximum residual disinfectant level of 4.0 ppm. Disinfection byproducts met federal limits, though haloacetic acids came closer to their limit than most: total trihalomethanes reached 54 ppb (limit 80 ppb) and haloacetic acids reached 53 ppb (limit 60 ppb).
Where does Roanoke get its tap water?
Roanoke’s water comes from a mix of surface water and groundwater: Carvins Cove Reservoir, Spring Hollow Reservoir on the Roanoke River, Crystal Spring, Muse Spring, and supplemental wells throughout the Roanoke Valley. The regional system has three major treatment facilities and more than 1,300 miles of water mains.
How is Roanoke water treated?
Treatment varies by source but generally includes aeration, coagulation and clarification, filtration, chlorine disinfection, fluoridation, and corrosion control through pH adjustment and orthophosphate. Spring Hollow also has granular activated carbon treatment to reduce PFAS. In the most recent report, lead was non-detect at the 90th percentile, with no homes over the action level.
Do I need a water softener or filter in Roanoke?
