FAQ

Additional Information On Chambersburg, PA Tap Water

Is Chambersburg tap water safe to drink?

Yes. Chambersburg’s drinking water meets federal EPA and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) standards. According to the most recent Consumer Confidence Report, all regulated contaminants were below maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). The Borough participates in the Partnership for Safe Water program and operates under standards that are often stricter than federal requirements.

Is Chambersburg tap water hard?

No. Chambersburg’s water is considered very soft due to low levels of calcium carbonate and other hardness minerals. Hardness averages approximately 10 parts per million, or about ½ grain per gallon. Soft water reduces scale buildup in plumbing and appliances.

Is there PFAS in Chambersburg tap water?

Chambersburg tested for PFAS as part of required federal monitoring. According to the most recent water quality report, PFOA and PFOS were not detected (ND) in the Borough’s water supply. The EPA has established new maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS individually. Based on the most recent testing, Chambersburg’s results were compliant with current federal PFAS standards.

Does Chambersburg tap water have fluoride?

Yes. Fluoride was detected at 1.27 mg/L, which is below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 2.0 mg/L (EPA goal) and within regulatory limits. Fluoride is added to promote dental health.

Does Chambersburg tap water contain chlorine?

Yes. Chlorine is used to disinfect the water and control microbial contaminants. In 2024, chlorine levels ranged from 0.23 to 1.43 mg/L in the distribution system, which is below the EPA maximum residual disinfectant level (MRDL) of 4.0 mg/L.

Where does Chambersburg get its tap water?

Chambersburg’s water comes from the East Branch of the Conococheague Creek, collected from an 18.25-square-mile watershed northeast of Caledonia State Park. Most of the watershed lies within Michaux State Forest, which helps protect water quality. Water is stored in Long Pine Run Reservoir before treatment and distribution.

How is Chambersburg water treated?

Chambersburg treats its surface water using a multi-step process that includes screening, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration through sand and anthracite media, and chlorination for disinfection. Corrosion control chemicals are added to minimize lead leaching from plumbing, and fluoride is added for dental health. The system is gravity-fed after treatment, which reduces energy use and pumping costs.

Do I need a water softener or filter in Chambersburg?

Because Chambersburg’s water is naturally very soft, most homeowners do not need a water softener. However, some residents may choose filtration systems to address taste preferences or for added peace of mind. While additional treatment is not required for safety, it may improve aesthetics depending on individual preferences.

How does Chambersburg monitor water quality?

The Borough conducts extensive monitoring throughout the year for microbial contaminants, inorganic chemicals, disinfection byproducts, turbidity, total organic carbon, lead and copper, PFAS compounds, and other regulated substances. In the most recent report, no violations were reported. Testing results are reviewed to ensure compliance with EPA and PA DEP standards and are published annually in the Consumer Confidence Report.
