Salem Hard Water

How Hard Is Salem Water?

Salem’s most recent water quality report doesn’t publish a hardness figure, so there is no official city number. Salem draws most of its water from the Roanoke River and supplements it with three groundwater wells, so mineral content can shift with the source mix. A free in-home water test is the quickest way to know your home’s hardness.

Where Can I Get A Water Quality Report?

You can access Salem’s annual Water Quality Report. Published by the City of Salem Water Department, it is also known as a consumer confidence report, and provides detailed data on the composition of your municipal water annually.

FAQ

Additional Information On Salem, VA Tap Water

Is Salem tap water safe to drink?

Yes. Salem’s drinking water meets federal (EPA) and Virginia Department of Health drinking water standards. The City of Salem Water Department has won the Virginia Office of Drinking Water’s Gold Award for excellence in clarification, filtration, and backwash every year since 2013.

Is Salem tap water hard?

Salem’s most recent water quality report doesn’t list a hardness level. Because the city blends Roanoke River water with groundwater from three wells, hardness at your tap can vary, and Roanoke Valley groundwater from limestone tends to be hard. Hard water leaves scale on fixtures, spots on dishes, and buildup inside water heaters. A free water test will tell you your home’s exact number.

Is there PFAS in Salem tap water?

No PFAS were found. Salem’s most recent water quality report shows that none of the 29 PFAS compounds tested under the EPA’s unregulated contaminant monitoring, or lithium, were detected in the city’s finished drinking water.

Does Salem tap water have fluoride?

Yes. Salem adds fluoride to help protect dental health. The most recent water quality report shows fluoride at 0.57 ppm, well below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 4.0 ppm.

Does Salem tap water contain chlorine?

Yes. Salem disinfects its water with chlorine. The most recent report shows a highest running annual average of 1.1 ppm (range 0.26 to 1.1 ppm), below the EPA maximum residual disinfectant level of 4.0 ppm. Disinfection byproducts were also below federal limits, with total trihalomethanes at 33 ppb (limit 80 ppb) and haloacetic acids at 29 ppb (limit 60 ppb).

Where does Salem get its tap water?

Salem’s primary source is the Roanoke River, supplemented by three groundwater wells. An emergency interconnection also lets the city buy or exchange water with the Western Virginia Water Authority if needed.

How is Salem water treated?

Salem’s surface water treatment plant uses clarification and filtration to remove sediment and particles, then chlorine for disinfection. Fluoride is added for dental health, and corrosion control helps protect household plumbing. In the most recent report, lead measured 3.1 ppb at the 90th percentile across 30 homes, with none over the 15 ppb action level.

Do I need a water softener or filter in Salem?

Salem’s water meets all safety standards, so treatment is a matter of preference. Some homeowners add a water softener to reduce scale buildup, especially when well water is part of the mix. Others install a reverse osmosis or whole-house filter to reduce chlorine taste and disinfection byproducts. Homes in surrounding Roanoke County on private wells should test regularly, since those wells aren’t covered by the city’s monitoring. A free water test shows what your home actually needs.

How does Salem monitor water quality?

The City of Salem Water Department tests throughout the year for bacteria, disinfectant levels, disinfection byproducts, inorganic chemicals, lead and copper, sodium, and pH, and took part in the EPA’s monitoring for emerging contaminants like PFAS. Results are reviewed by the Virginia Department of Health and published in the annual Water Quality Report.
